Two Mile Coppice - Broadwey, Weymouth

Site Description

Two Mile Coppice is a 5.7 ha semi-natural woodland, of which 1.5ha in the north east corner is ancient in origin. It forms part of the larger Lorton SSSI (total area 21ha, the remainder of which is neutral grassland). Historically a coppice woodland, but not thought to have been managed as coppice for some time, consequently the coppice is 'stored' and the structure gradually reverting to high forest.

Main species - ash, pedunculate oak, and hazel with some field maple, occasional willow, poplar, hawthorn & holly. Situated on Oxford Clay, the site is generally flat, and becomes wet in winter. The wood is close to the edge of Weymouth and has potential as a recreational resource, currently restricted internally by a number of ditches and steep slopes.
