Our woods in focus
Ruffet & Big Wood - Coulsdon, Sutton

Long term intentions

The Woodland Trust's corporate objectives of improving woodland biodiversity and enhancing the public's enjoyment of woodlands can both be met at Ruffett and Big Wood. The long-term intentions which help to achieve these objectives are:

Improving biodiversity

- To create a woodland more diverse in structure and species. Sycamore will continue to be a major component of the woodland but intervention will be necessary to ensure other species are also able to develop.

- To introduce more woodland edge habitat and more open sunny conditions

Enhancing the public's enjoyment of woodland

- To maintain free and open access along the current network of permissive paths for the benefit of pedestrian visitors to the site.

- To aim to continue involving the community in managing the woodland (where practical), especially via Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers
