Our woods in focus
 Pound Farm - Great Glemham

Long term intentions

To create new native broadleaved woodland on a site, which also incorporates meadowland, hedgerows and ponds. Improving species biodiversity is a long term objective which will be met by managing all the habitats to maximise their value for conservation. The existing ancient woodland will be managed to ensure native species are regenerating in a structured woodland where a proportion of deadwood is retained and the margins are enhanced for wildlife. The surrounding secondary plantation will become a buffer to the ASNW will be maintained their biodiversity value within the site.

The meadows will be managed so as to control weeds and to diversify the habitat with certain areas cut and the hay removed annually and biannually and other areas left uncut. In the long term it is the intention that the meadows will be grazed. The hedgerows will be managed as wildlife corridors which provide shelter by laying and then cutting them to promote 'A' shaped hedges with thick stockproof bases.

The ponds adjacent habitats will be managed to enhance their conservation value. Once they have become established they will be maintained through the regular removal of debris, dominant vegetation and silt.

As timber production is a long term objective formative pruning will be carried out on trees of good form for future selection as timber trees. At year 20 the areas of secondary woodland that have shown good growth and form will be assessed to be thinned as to promote the development of well formed trees, and promote natural broadleaf regeneration.

The long term intention is to increase the public's enjoyment of the site by retaining current levels of use and promoting the site to a wider audience where possible. This will be achieved by maintaining existing facilities, managing the open spaces and the ride network and by providing information on the site and its development both on site, in Woodland Trust literature and through local media.
