Pot Kiln Wood - Cranham, Upminster
Long term intentions
The long term management intention is to allow the scrub to naturally develop from the existing hedgerows whilst maintaining a significant area (circa 50%) of permanent, unimproved grassland, centring on the south-eastern field. This will be managed by flailing, grazing and/or hay cutting. Such a management regime is intended to ensure the survival and development of flora and fauna associated with both grassland and scrub habitats.
The Trust’s corporate objective of increasing new native woodland will be achieved by colonisation of open ground by ancient hedgrows and planting in one small area.
The land will be open to the public but, given its location and accesibility, relatively low usage is expected. Most users will enter via the public footpath, but access from the housing estate to the south will also be maintained.
The option to lease the site to an appropriate conservation body interested in maintaining the site’s grassland character will be explored.
