Our woods in focus
 Old Copse - Sonning Common

Long term intentions

To provide habitat continuity for this ancient semi-natural woodland, it will be managed by minimal intervention in order that natural woodland processes can shape the future of the wood. This is in keeping with the Woodland Trust's approach to managing ancient semi-natural woods by allowing them to develop naturally. The mature trees will be left to gradually decline thus providing space and light for the next generation of young trees. Dead wood will be left standing where safe to do so and fallen dead wood will be retained to maintain this element for biodiversity. Any woodland operations will be managed to avoid any potential damage to the ancient woodbanks. Tree safety surveys will be carried out regularly.

The existing paths will be kept open for public access for the future in order that all visitors are allowed free access to enjoy the wood.

This management of the woodland meets three of the corporate visions of the Woodland Trust: no further loss of ancient woodland; restoring and improving biodiversity and; increasing people's understanding and enjoyment of woodlands.
