Our woods in focus
 Allardices Wood - Warrington

Long term intentions

Our long-term intention is to ensure the continuity of high forest mixed broadleaved woodland (NVC 11) in this location. Our aim will be to enhance structural diversity in terms of age and size classification. Future canopy regeneration will be the focus of our work and its is anticipated that oak, sycamore and lime will form the predominate canopy species in the long term.

The woodland will continue to provide significant urban wildlife habitat and play an important role in the local landscape.

The tree safety regime will be the key driver of management. It will directly dictate the duration and the form in which mature trees and standing deadwood are retained (where it is safe to do so), and therefore will also provide the main opportunities for structural change within the wood. Where suitable canopy gaps are created through this process we shall aim to restock with oak, rowan, birch and other understorey species such as hazel, dog rose and hawthorn. Invasive and heavy shading species such as rhododendron will be removed. Fly tipping continues to pose a threat to natural regeneration and also serves to undermine our conservation problem. We shall continue to work to control this insidious problem. We will attempt to recruit more local voluntary wardens to ensure the site has a positive input from local people.
